Life Education Centre is an outreach learning centre of Auroville. The centre was founded in 1991 when there were fewer schools in the villages and children lacked motivation for education. It functioned as an informal school under a tree for the first few years for girls and boys, later organically growing to a skilling and growth center for school drop-out adolescent girls from marginalized communities.

The girls learned sewing, embroidery, and crochet and received much needed emotional support and guidance to understand the larger world. They participated in a variety of programs that helped their self-discovery, creativity, and integral well-being.

Sewing & Embroidery

The basis for all programs at LEC, from when the center was founded until today, is the Integral Education philosophy of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother that aims to develop consciousness of the physical, mental, vital, spiritual, and the psychic parts of the being. LEC functions as a unit under SAIIER (Sri Aurobindo International Institute for Education and Research).

Classes

LEC continues to offer skill development, integral well-being programs for girls and women, career guidance for students, educational workshops, and publishes books.

Sakhi

Sakhi, the social enterprise of LEC, was founded in 2018 to integrate opportunities for financially rewarding work, learning, and growth. Women artisans employed at Sakhi spend 15% of their daily paid work time in integral well-being activities offered by LEC.
